Suggested Anchor IntroductionHorticulture students from universities across the United States were at New Mexico State University to participate in a national competition. Anna María Pérez-Wright has details. StoryNew Mexico State University hosted about 100 horticultural hotshots from 11 universities across the nation during the 62nd annual national intercollegiate floral evaluation and design competition April 2nd through 4th. Coordinator Sabine Whitley says the evaluation competition can last up to two hours with students judging 30 floral classes. There are both amateur and professional design competition categories, including one for a tablescape. "They're given a table with the place settings on it already. And they're given a scenario. And they are to create an entire tablescape using fresh flowers for a banquet. This includes up to decorating around the plates, under the plates, making napkin holders with fresh flowers. This one is probably the most sought-after prize of all of the design competitions." After competitions, students toured southern New Mexico greenhouses and museums.
