Suggested Anchor IntroductionThe U.S. Department of Agriculture is planning to revise the 10-year-old Food Guide Pyramid. New Mexico State University's Anna María Pérez-Wright reports. StoryThe U-S Department of Agriculture is reviewing and updating the Food Guide Pyramid, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year. Food and nutrition specialist Martha Archuleta with New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service says the pyramid was designed with foods readily available to fit an audience with a wide range of food preferences. "There are some challenges that go along with that. If you read the information that goes with the Food Guide Pyramid, you will see that it does emphasize whole grains and fruits and vegetables, but simply looking at the icon, that doesn't come across quite so clearly. The most important thing to keep in mind is balance and moderation and trying to choose most of our foods from sources that are more minimally processed." Archuleta says new food guide recommendations are expected from U-S-D-A in 2004. For N-M-S-U's College of Agriculture and Home Economics, I'm Anna María Pérez-Wright. |
