Agricultural research on the Pecos Valley's top commodities will highlight an evening field day August 20th at New Mexico State University's Agricultural Science Center at Artesia. Scientists will showcase their research in corn silage, alfalfa, turfgrass, cotton and weed control during field tours. Interim science center superintendent Robert Flynn says because eastern New Mexico contains more than half of all the dairy cows in the state, the evening's program will also highlight dairy research.

"I believe that the face of agriculture has changed over the last ten, fifteen years due to the dairy industry. A lot more corn is being grown now and the beneficial reuse of that manure, as well as potential environmental impacts is being investigated here, so we really wanted to showcase that."

Science center entomologist Jane Pierce has planned an insect safari for kids visiting the center during the field day. The Artesia field day, August 20th, is free. Registration begins at 4, followed by a barbecue dinner. The tours begin at 5:30. For N-M-S-U's College of Agriculture and Home Economics, I'm Anna María Pérez-Wright.
