Longtime New Mexico State University educator and administrator LeRoy Daugherty is the new associate dean and associate director of the Agricultural Experiment Station. Daugherty, who joined N-M-S-U in 1975, has served in a variety of academic and administrative posts for the College of Agriculture and Home Economics. He's been acting department head of N-M-S-U's fishery and wildlife sciences department, and crop and soil science department.

"I'm pleased to work with the strong researchers that we have in the College, to serve the production agriculture that we have in New Mexico and all of the citizenry of New Mexico."

In his quarter-century with N-M-S-U, Daugherty has seen significant research growth at the university. He says there's a strong research emphasis among the college's faculty today, especially in laboratory science.

"We have strong nationally competitive scientists who have large interdisciplinary programs funded from agencies not only in the USDA, but the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, EPA, Department of Energy, a lot of national funding."

Looking ahead, Daugherty says water will remain a huge issue for all New Mexicans, including those in agriculture. He says everything the Agricultural Experiment Station does from plant breeding to stress resistance, from new irrigation techniques to examining endangered species issues, takes on greater urgency. For N-M-S-U's College of Agriculture and Home Economics, I'm Anna María Pérez-Wright.
