Suggested Anchor IntroductionAgricultural producers served by Elephant Butte Irrigation District can attend a free workshop in Las Cruces Oct. 23 to learn efficient irrigation practices. New Mexico State University's Anna María Pérez-Wright has more. StoryNew Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service will host a workshop October 23rd in Las Cruces to help agricultural producers better understand the irrigation process and make the best use of their water. Extension Agricultural Specialist Leeann DeMouche says the workshop will explain Elephant Butte Irrigation District, or E-B-I-D's distribution system to water users. "If an irrigator knows exactly what it takes for E-B-I-D to get water onto their land, then hopefully that process can be faster, it can become more efficient and more productive for them all around." DeMouche says because E-B-I-D serves more than 8,000 users from Sierra County to El Paso, it's sometimes difficult for the district to communicate one-to-one with consumers. She says the workshop ties in with research by N-M-S-U's Water Task Force, which includes about 75 scientists in a variety of areas. "This particular workshop is coming out of the Rio Grande Basin Initiative, which is out of Frank Ward's, project, which is looking at institutional barriers to water conservation in agriculture." DeMouche says the workshop will also include information about coping with the drought and what producers might expect next year. The free workshop October 23rd begins at 10 a.m. at the E-B-I-D offices, 530 South Melendres Street in Las Cruces. DeMouche anticipates the event will end before noon.
