With a tip of the hat to winning traditions, New Mexico State University unveiled a new Equine Education Center. During grand opening ceremonies, students who had yearned for classroom, tack room and locker facilities gave tours of the new facility on the southwest edge of campus. Animal and Range Sciences Department Head Mark Wise says the center will benefit students who want to minor in horse management, ride on the nationally known equestrian team or take beginning riding as a physical education course.

"I think this is just a tremendous opportunity for our students. I think it gives them a home, for the most part, a place that they can come out of the weather. They can come into an environment and learn. And we're very grateful for all the people who have supported it and really look forward to having a lot more activity in this part of campus."

Supporter Martha Sayles says the facility will build on the tradition of NMSU's winning teams, which have captured national titles in western equitation and women's rodeo.

"Everybody looks to New Mexico State University as a leader in horse activities, horse research, horse show team, and this facility is just the best thing that could happen to New Mexico State and to the horse program here. We are so excited to see the building, and it's designed well and it's gorgeous."

Long-term plans call for adding a 1,000-seat, enclosed arena where equestrian, livestock, 4-H and FFA events could be held on campus. For N-M-S-U's College of Agriculture and Home Economics, I'm D'Lyn Ford.
